Summer Skin Savers

One of the skincare essentials for every summer are definitely SPF products - I usually use a separate one for the face and the body and this year these are the ones that made it into my vacation suitcase:

Ultrasun High SPF 50 reflex  is the newest sunscreen from the Swiss suncare range Ultrasun, aimed specifically at children and people with sensitive skin. It contains only mineral filters, a mixture of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, is fragrance-free, mineral oil free, preservative free and alcohol free and claims to be water-resistant. Because there are no chemical filters it's great for kids and people with sensitive skin but consequently, the high amount of mineral filters means that the texture of this cream is very thick, almost like a paste and I really had to rub it in my skin well and even after that my skin looked a bit paler although there was no obvious white cast. I was however impressed that despite the texture, once the product sinks in there is no tackiness and I was left with very soft skin and most importantly, no irritation at all.

Would I recommend it? Yes, if you're looking for a high SPF product with mineral filters but be prepared for the hard-to-blend texture and a slightly lighter look of your skin. (cca. 28€ for 100 ml, in Slovenia Ultrasun products are sold at the department store NAMA).

Ingredients of the Ultrasun

Garnier Ambre Solaire kids SPF 30:  Now, because of the hard-to-blend consistency I didn't use the Ultrasun SPF 50 all over my body, just on my calves and my arms where my skin is most sensitive and everywhere else I used this Garnier sunscreen. It includes both mineral (titanium dioxide) and chemical (Mexoryl) filters. The consistency of this hydrating milk is very runny (probably also due to the alcohol denat in the ingredients), it's easy to blend into the skin and feels pleasant and non-greasy. It does have a very subtle apricot scent, typical for Ambre Solaire products.

Would I recommend it? Yes. I think it's a very nice affordable product (cca.10€ for 200 ml) that does the job really well.

Becca SPF 30 Mineral Primer I have received this primer months ago as a giveaway prize from Becca on twitter and even though it's supposed to be used as a primer for foundation (it's all in the name) I just used it by itself. The consistency of this primer is quite thick (again, mineral filters), almost like a paste but it doesn't leave a white cast on the face. The SPF is in the form of zinc oxide, it is oil free, has some anti-oxidants and everything about it just sounds perfect. Except for one important detail: it made me breakout like crazy. Seriously, half an hour after applying it I could see new blemishes pop up and even though my skin is very much prone to spots it's usually not that bad.

Would I recommend it? Only if you're not prone to breakouts and even then I would suggest to get a sample of this product. Also, I don't think this would be the best product for dry skin. (price: 45€ for 50 ml).

Ingredients (from Becca website):
Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 17% w/w (Purpose: Sunscreen)
Inactive Ingredients: Aqua (Water - purified), Cyclomethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glyceryl Distearate, Ceteareth-20 (Cetomacrogol 1000), PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben (Methyl Hydroxybenzoate), Tocopheryl acetate (D-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate), Parfum (Fragrance), Carbomer (Carbomer 940), Camellia Sinensis Extract (Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract), Oenothera Biennis Oil (Evening Primrose Oil), Sodium Hyaluronate, Propylparaben (Propyl Hydroxybenzoate), Ubiquinone 10 (Ubidecarenone)

Aveda Lip Saver SPF 15:  I was really impressed by this product, it is quite a waxy lip balm and you only need to apply very little. Even though the filters are chemical it felt great on my lips - very hydrating and it really made them look and feel soft and smooth. It also has a very nice spicy, cinnamon scent which I love.  (9.40 GBP for 4.25g, I bought mine from Lookfantastic)

Would I recommend it? Yes, it's a great product to protect your lips.  (9.40 GBP for 4.25g, I bought mine from Lookfantastic)

Ingredients (as listed on Beautypedia.com): Active: Octinoxate (7%), Avobenzone (2%), Other: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Jojoba Esters, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Beeswax (Cera Alba) Cetyl Ricinoleate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Flavor, Tocopheryl Acetate

Those were my choices this year - what SPF products did you use/are you using? As you can see I still haven't found the perfect sunscreen for my face so the search continues.

  2. What a shame about the Becca, I must have been lucky with that one then as my skin is crazy break out prone and I was ok with that. I'm having so many issues at the moment with my haircare breaking me out, so not good!
I tend to forget about Aveda, but do like the sound of that lip saver, actually I keep meaning to check out their makeup range, do you know if its meant to be any good? x

Hi Replica, great that the Becca worked for you, I guess there really isn't one product that would suit everyone. What other SPF products did you like for your face? Ouch about your hair - do you get blemishes around the hairline? It might get better once the weather cools down. The Lip Saver is really good but I haven't tried any Aveda makeup products - they are not sold here and I haven't really noticed them online. Hope your skin gets better! x
